Paul is a graduate of the University of Scranton, where he received his B.S. degree with honors in chemistry. As an undergraduate, Dr. Orsulak participated in a research program investigating the biochemistry of Down’s syndrome and worked with Dr. Martin D. Appleton and others under a grant from the Scranton Area Foundation. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA, where he was a National Institute of Child Health and Human Development trainee.
Dr. Orsulak was Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and Staff Associate in the Department of Pathology, New England Deaconess Hospital, where he co-founded a laboratory for specialized research studies and education in psychiatric chemistry of antidepressants. Dr. Orsulak moved to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1982 where he was Professor of Psychiatry and Pathology. He continued his research in various areas of mental heath and founded the largest hospital based substance abuse testing laboratory in the country. He also became an expert in drug interactions and interactions of drugs with natural products and diet supplements at the beginning of this field. He was Vice President for Clinical Affairs at Medtox Laboratories in St. Paul, Minnesota and has been has been a consultant for many major diagnostics and pharmaceutical companies, performing clinical trials and product evaluations.
Dr Orsulak has published more than 250 peer reviewed papers, book chapters and monographs and delivered more than 200 workshops and lectures throughout the US, Eastern and Western Europe and Australia. He has received numerous professional awards for his scientific and worldwide educational contributions. He is an active member of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry and the Society of Forensic Toxicologists. He is currently a medical legal consultant in the area of drug use and interactions and has worked for law firms in Texas, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina and Kansas. He lives with his wife Helene in Minneapolis MN and Hana HI.
